Withdrawing Room

Withdrawing Room

The withdrawing room is where the ladies would have retired after dinner to play cards, listen to the pianoforte or simply chat. The wallpaper in this room is copied from wallpaper salvaged from the original mansion. It is embedded with mica so that it sparkles in candlelight.

The pianoforte in this room is a Longman & Broderip, and is probably the one listed on the inventory of items shipped to Montpelier in 1796. Local belief is that is was the first pianoforte to venture into the Province of Maine.
